What Materials are Best for Business Shirts?
The best fabric material for you will ultimately boil down to factors such as the nature of your work, the climate of your location, and whether or not you and/or your employees have allergies or irritation. WorkArmour offers shirts in fabric such as cotton, polyester cotton, 100% cotton, polyester, elastane, and mixed fabric blends, like cotton-polyester blends (65/35 and 50/50), and cotton-polyester-elastane blends (65/72, 30/25, 5/3).
100% Cotton:
Cotton stands as one of the most popular fabrics for crafting t-shirts, and for good reason; it’s soft, fluffy, and natural. Derived from the seedpod of the cotton plant, before being spun into yarn or thread, its widespread use is also attributed to its breathability and hypoallergenic nature, making it particularly appealing for those with sensitive skin. Available in a variety of weaves, cotton is suitable for hot climates or with sensitive skin. Although cotton is a durable material, it's less robust than polyester or cotton-polyester blends and tends to shrink in hot water, necessitating care in washing with cold water and minimal detergent. Cotton provides an excellent surface for direct-to-garment (DTG) printing, particularly with 100% cotton garments, which yield crisp, opaque designs, though the effectiveness may diminish with thicker garments like sweatshirts. Advances in textile technology have led to the development of cotton fabrics that are treated to reduce wrinkling. This treatment involves applying a resin that cross-links cotton fibres, making them less prone to creasing and easier to smooth out after washing. As a result, wrinkle-resistant cotton retains the natural comfort and breathability of traditional cotton while offering the added convenience of reduced ironing needs.
100% Polyester:
Polyester is a synthetic fabric that offers durability, resiliency, and quick-drying properties. It’s ideal for athletic and adventurous activities due to its ability to maintain shape without stretching or shrinking, resist odours, and repel stains. Polyester offers a lightweight, silky feel, though it may trap sweat, feeling clammy in warm weather or cooler in cold conditions, and could potentially irritate very sensitive skin. Advances in printing technology have made it easier to produce vibrant, durable prints on polyester. Renowned for outlasting cotton and most blends, polyester excels in resisting fading, shrinking, and wrinkling. For care, it's advisable to use all-purpose detergent with warm water and tumble-dry at low temperatures, ensuring its longevity and maintaining its appearance.
Blends:
Essentially, a blend is a fabric or yarn created by combining different types of fibres, offering advantages from each. Blends are prized for bringing together the best features of their component materials, such as tri-blends, which combine rayon, cotton, and polyester. CVC (Chief Value Cotton) predominantly consists of cotton, while a 50/50 blend equally mixes polyester and cotton, also known as cotton/poly. Polyester-Spandex blends (85/15) are celebrated in activewear for their elasticity (thanks to spandex) and durability (thanks to polyester). Cotton-Polyester blends (65/35 and 50/50) are versatile, used in everything from shirts to bedding, offering ease of care, breathability, and a vibrant canvas for designs, blending the best of both fibres. Polyester-Cotton-Rayon blends (50/25/25) are notable for their softness, stretchiness, and durability, perfect for comfortable, loose-fitting clothes with a vintage feel, especially when printed using the DTG method, due to their unique fibre combination and looser weave.

What are some tips to consider when choosing corporate shirts for your business?
When choosing corporate shirts for your business, it's important to prioritise quality and comfort by selecting high-quality materials that are suitable for all-day wear. Ensuring brand consistency is also crucial, so choose shirts that align with your company's colours and branding. Durability is key, so opt for fabrics that retain their appearance after multiple washes. A wide size range is essential to accommodate all staff members comfortably. Consider the specific needs of your staff, such as the necessity for pockets for pens or breathable fabrics, to enhance functionality.
